Parent and Guardian presentation: Bullying, Technology and Youth Depression
Tuesday September 29th, 2015, 6:30pm
We are committed to taking serious, proactive steps to curb a problem that is found everywhere. Our efforts this year is to continue to raise awareness about bullying and cyber bullying with students and parents.
Mr. John Halligan will be at Mercy on September 29th to conduct a presentation for the students during the day and an evening presentation for Mercy and Xavier parents and guardians in the evening. Mr. Halligan will relay his own tragic experience as a Dad whose 13 year old son took his own life in 2003, after incessant bullying by peers, both in school and online. His story is riveting and powerful, and reminds students that there is a face, a person, a heart, on the other end of the computer screen.
His presentation will begin with a short video collection of home movie clips and still pictures of Ryan. John will then begin to tell the story of Ryan and the factors that led up to his son’s suicide. The students will gain a perspective from inside a family of a child who is a victim of bullying and cyber bullying. They will also gain awareness about the signs and risk of teenage suicide and how best to help a friend. As part of Mr. Halligan’s presentation, students will have the chance to ask him questions.
As parents and guardians, you are invited to a presentation prepared specifically for you. Please join us on Tuesday, September 29th at 6:30 pm in Mercy’s Auditorium for “Bullying, Technology and Youth Depression” presented by Mr. John Halligan. We strongly encourage all parents and guardians to attend this presentation. Mr. Halligan not only delivers a powerful story but also provides parents with strategies that they can use with their own children when it comes to bullying, proper social media use, and teen depression.
We encourage you to ask your child about the presentation and discuss it together, especially after seeing it for yourself.
