Ecology Club Active at Mercy

Members of Mercy High School's Ecology Club recently participated in activities designed to beautify their school campus as well as the greater Middletown community.

The club sponsored the traditional dedication of a tree on the school grounds in honor of the graduating class of 2010.

Ecology Club Active at Mercy Mercy students Elizabeth Falcigno and Emily Fritsch plant trees at Middletown's new orchard.

Elizabeth Falcigno and Emily Fritsch, members of the class of 2012, recently helped plant chestnut trees at Middletown's experimental American Chestnut orchard. The two students joined with a crew of volunteers who planted a total of 182 chestnuts on a warm and sunny Saturday. These hybrid trees will produce nuts which eventually provide blight-resistant, food-producing trees to help in the reforestation of the Northeast.

The Ecology Club at Mercy High School is comprised of students interested in learning about environmental principles and ways to improve the ecology. It sponsors the school's recycling program and Earth Day events. Ms. Jackie Ceberek serves as faculty moderator.
