Mercy student excelled at summer Mock Trail Camp at Drexel University

Aug 28 2012

Esteemed Members of the Mercy High School Community,

My name is Mike Vitlip, and I am the current Pre-Law Advisor at Drexel University.  I am writing to tell you about a great activity that one of your students Sabrina Streeter took part in this summer.

Earlier this summer, from June 25th-29th, Drexel University hosted a Mock Trial Camp for high school students from throughout the Philadelphia Area, and beyond (we had a student from as far away as Florida in attendance).  The camp was a five-day, non-residential summer program designed to introduce rising high school juniors and seniors to the world of mock trial and trial advocacy. Students learned the basics of trial procedure, courtroom decorum, the rules of evidence, and courtroom objections. Students also divided into teams and worked on writing direct examinations, cross examinations, opening statements, and closing remarks. Students practiced their roles throughout the week, preparing for the culmination of the program wherein students demonstrated what they learned in full trials performed for their parents and other guests. Students also received an overview of the college admissions and financial aid processes, as well as Drexel’s BS/JD Accelerated Degree program.

Overall, the week was a great opportunity for students to build skills, connect with students with whom they have a common interest from other schools, and learn about the professional etiquette required of members of the legal profession.  All students walked away with a greater understanding and appreciation for the law and new skills, such as public speaking, the creation of logical arguments, and professionalism, that will serve them well no matter what career path they follow after graduation.

All too often schools will hear immediately when any of their students do something negative with their time away from school, but rarely do they hear when their students are spending their time away making a positive impact in their lives and their communities.  I wanted to be sure that you are aware of the character of the young women that you teach, and wanted to be sure that you knew that this particular student is out there making a difference and seeking out opportunities to grow personally and professionally with her time off.

On behalf of the Drexel Pre-Law and Mock Trial Communities, it was a pleasure having Sabrina participate in our program this summer.  She was a pleasure to coach, and contributed positively to the great week had by all students in attendance.

Best wishes for a great school year.  If I can ever be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Michael D. Vitlip, J.D.
