TechTigers Robotics Team Competes in World Championships!
TechTigers, Mercy's FIRST® Robotics team, headed to Houston to compete in the World Championships! This was the second consecutive year the team competed and the third since their founding. They competed once again as the only all-girl team from New England to earn a spot at the World Championships.
The mission of FIRST® is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get.
TechTigers was founded in 2010, and is dedicated to a similar mission: providing students with the skills needed for the 21st century world. The team has 17 members and 12 volunteer professional mentors. During build season, TechTigers meets every Monday through Thursday for three hours after school, and for seven hours on Saturdays to prepare for competitions.
FIRST describes their robotics competion as, "combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology." Under strict rules, limited time and resources, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors.
The team's hard work has proven well worth it: they earned the
regional FIRST® Impact Award and the district championship FIRST® Impact Award, in additon to securing their place at Worlds, during competition season.
The FIRST® Impact Award is the organization's most prestigous award. It honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST®. It is presented to the team judged to have the most significant measurable impact of its partnerships among its participants and community over a sustained period, not just a single build season.
