For the first time in 10 years, Mercy Cross Country claimed the SCC championship, scoring 33 points to beat Cheshire by 55 points and Sacred Heart Academy by 75 points.
The 33 points was the third best point total for a champion in the 31-year history of the league, and the league title was the fourth in program history.
Led by the duo of Cora Wasiolek ’28 and Sarah Roberts ’26, Mercy placed all seven of its varsity runners in the top 24, and four runners in the top 12 at East Shore Park in New Haven. Wasiolek and Roberts were joined on the All SCC first team by Clara Romero ’25 and Calista Nephew ‘26, and Alyson Low ’28, Chloe Gaboury ’25 and Heather Meisinger ’26 made the All-SCC second team.
A year after Mercy lost to Cheshire in the championship, the Tigers came back and took control of the race from the start, surging to an early lead. Inspired by an authoritative win by Elisabeth Romero ’28 in the freshman race, the team had all seven of its runners finish before Cheshire’s top four, including three before its first finisher. Veronika Meriano ’26 rounded out the day by leading the junior varsity to a resounding victory, which included six girls in the top 12.
The day also included Head Coach Matthew Conyers receiving the 2024 SCC Coach of the Year honor.
The Class MM state championship is Saturday, Oct. 25. The team will run at 10:45 a.m. at Wickham Park in Manchester.
